How to Balance and Heal the Root Chakra

The root chakra, in Sanskrit Muladhara (Mula translating to root, and Adhara translating to base), reflects your groundedness and security in life. When the root chakra is balanced you notice financial abundance, fearlessness, trust in the universe’s ability to provide for you and overall, a connection with the Earth. You may need to balance and heal your root chakra if you feel worry about your financial needs being met, scarcity, disconnection with Mother Earth, or instability within your life. Taking the time to heal this energetic center of your body can result in attracting more of your positive physical desires rapidly into your life and feeling full of satisfaction for all that you have. On a physical level, the root chakra’s energy permeates the surrounding tissues of it’s location and affects the organs and glands nearby. If you notice adrenal fatigue and burnout this is definitely an indicator of a root chakra imbalance. Anorexia and obesity and also indicators as they show that the individual has either a scarcity of food, or a psychological fear of not having enough food and so they over eat to ensure they are fed. This all has to do with the fight or flight response in the body being activated as a result of an imbalance in the root chakra. If you find yourself suffering from any of these ailments, please seek the help of a doctor immediately and work with the chakra balancing alongside your doctor’s recommended treatment. The root chakra vibrates at a frequency of the color red, and using color therapy to heal this chakra can be pivotal in the process towards balance. If you notice that you are subconsciously drawn to things of the color red this means you have an imbalance within this energy center. You don’t necessarily love it but somehow end up choosing things for your life which are red. This is a compensation for what you lack, and an indicator to become more grounded. There is also a mantra that corresponds to the root chakra, and that is “LAM.” Chanting this mantra 108 times along with doing the following exercise can bring you into the present moment.

Exercise: Visualizing a bright red lotus flower in the location of this chakra (the base of the spine), and imagining on every in breath energy coming into your root chakra and cleaning it, then on each out breath chant the mantra LAM as you imagine the toxins of this chakra coming out and the lotus flower becoming brighter and brighter red. Do this meditation for several minutes until your root chakra feels light and full of vibrancy.ย 

Essential oils can be an excellent tool in anointing the physical body and simultaneously clearing any blockages in your energy by stimulating feelings relating to the chosen aroma. The olfactory gland is responsible for two things, smell and memory. With this connection, aroma can trigger reactions in the brain and create feelings of bliss, harmony, and serenity. Sold at your local health food store or apothecary, I recommend trying Vetiver, Frankincense, Patchouli, and Myrrh. Other essential oils that have a deeply earthy aroma will do amazingly as well as they serve to energetically place your feet firmly onto the ground.

Exercise: Carry one of these essential oils with you throughout your day and when you feel fearful or anxious drop 2 drops into your palms and inhale deeply for 5 seconds, then exhale for a count of 5 seconds. Repeat this 7 times or until your nervous system feels calm and secure. You can also purchase an essential oil diffuser and allow the aroma to fill your home or office.ย 

Mastery of the root chakra comes from “spiritualizing the energy center” as Cyndi Dale, author of “The Complete Book of Chakra Healing” has stated. This means that through the mundane tasks and lessons of the root chakra such as eating healthy foods, drinking enough water, gathering that food and water, ensuring you have a safe place to live, and living without fear of running out of these things which you need to survive, you are able to find a sense of connection to spirit and purpose by doing and learning from these tasks.
